Dependence on Mideast Oil is a National Security Problem

It is good to see that Bush is acknowledging the problem:

Bush said the United States was looking for ways to “diversify away from fossil fuels” to reduce its dependence on Middle East oil. “We’re hooked on oil from the Middle East, which is a national security problem and an economic security problem,” Bush said.

However, notice how Bush says "Middle East Oil". Oil dependency is itself also a problem. Bush's energy policy needs some serious work...

We need to do more than just think about the problem. For example, a shift to Hydrogen Fuel Cell automobiles and other similar technology would drastically reduce dependence on oil. Just think about it... gasoline has to be one of our primary uses for oil. Bush does provide incentives for research into Hydrogen Fuel Cell technology, but likely not enough to make a real difference.

Aside from new technology, why not increase federal standards for miles per gallon?
